Careers at Kames
QUALITY
Kames provides the best quality
& best tasting Steelhead Trout
to our customers all over the world.
We take huge pride in our Scottish Steelhead Trout – unique in the marketplace, award-winning and featured on the menus of many of the best menus in the UK and beyond.
Behind all of this is our people and their husbandry skill. Our farmers are trained to think with insight and initiative about the fish in their responsibility. We are big enough to be a serious industry player – we won Best Aquaculture Company in the UK at the 2022 industry awards, and Best Animal Welfare in 2023 – but small enough for everyone to get experience across every aspect of the business no matter their job. Genetics, fish health and sustainability are integrated into the daily routines of each team.
SUSTAINABILITY
We produce our fish responsibly
& with transparency, so our customers
can fully understand our commitment.
Farming for the future is fundamental to our survival as a business – and fundamental for humanity! Our inhouse Sustainability Group tracks all areas of farm life – from feed source to recycling waste. Our own unique Scottish broodstock genetics programme and integrated hatcheries mean we can control every aspect of our fish’s life cycle to be as low impact as possible. Our new initiatives with Cargill’s SeaFurther Programme and our Future50 project are driving further change and forward-thinking towards regenerative farming and net zero.
COMMUNITY
We farm for the future,
protecting our rural
environment & people.
It’s a privilege (especially when the sun shines) to live and work in such an unspoilt, beautiful part of the world. Working in a remote location means that community – both within the team and locally – is hugely important.
We’ve operated as a local employer in Argyll for over 50 years, and our community involvement is stronger than ever - we have recently been voted Employer of the Year by Lochgilphead High School, supported Kilhoan Estate’s regeneration project in Loch Melfort and are looking to the future, with a new community fund established for local projects with long-term impact.
Farm Work
Learn fish husbandry from the best in the industry across both freshwater and sea sites. We have operations at Loch Melfort, Loch Craignish, Loch Tay, and Pooltiel, Skye, as well as several hatcheries around Scotland and North of England, and our own pioneering genetics programme.
Research & Development
We have strong ties with R&D centres and universities in Scotland and the UK, and have engaged in highly successful Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, keeping us at the heart of latest innovations.
Head Office
Our team has been based at Loch Melfort for 50 years and is very much the central hub of Kames activity. Our management, finance, administration, marketing and fish health departments operate from here, as well as our main hatchery.
Training & Experience
We regularly take on young starters, and see opportunity and potential in everyone regardless of experience. Lochgilphead High School voted us the Best Local Employer of 2022.
