Fish Husbandry, Isle of Skye
Overview:
We are seeking a fish husbandry operative to work at our Isle of Skye production area. This area is integral to our company growth strategy, and we have a close-knit team who have steadily developed the site over the past five years to become an essential part of our business.
The Role:
You will be responsible for feeding the fish, fish welfare monitoring, assisting with treatments, maintaining equipment and harvesting.
Why Kames?
Kames is a unique place to work. We are the leading trout producer in the UK and the only farm to grow trout in the sea, which we’ve pioneered for over 50 years. We’re passionate about the exceptional quality of our fish and the successful applicant would need to be serious about working hard to achieve our high standards of husbandry and welfare. We are also Scotland’s oldest family fish farm and have a long-standing record of innovation, connection to academia and education, a belief in valuing people and knowledge alongside technology, and caring for our environment and our community. This is not just our workplace; it’s our home.
Everyone in our team obtains a broad range of experience and a holistic understanding of fish husbandry through our fully vertically integrated farm, giving them a level of skill and expertise that is hard to achieve in a bigger farm setting, as well as the opportunity to be a valued voice at the table.
Kames won Best Aquaculture Company in the UK in 2022 and Best Animal Welfare in 2023 at the industry awards, and our core principles of quality, sustainability and community underpin both our everyday working life and our future strategy.
What we’re looking for:
The ideal candidate will have fish husbandry and fish health and water monitoring experience. Candidates with formal boat training will be at an advantage, and a full, clean driving licence is essential. We’re looking for a good team player with a can-do attitude who will work hard, and who is eager to learn and progress.
The Detail:
We offer an excellent financial package depending on experience, with a salary of £26,750 to £30,250. Normal hours of work are Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm with a 1 in 3 weekend rota system.
Accommodation is available in Kames’ shared accommodation property, in the village of Glendale, on the banks of Loch Pooltiel. Our site at Loch Pooltiel is in an area of exceptional beauty, near to the famous Neist Point Lighthouse in North-West Skye, and with the active local communities of Glendale and Dunvegan.
